24.09.2001 - My name is Walter Andrew Salassi ..... it is very unfortunatel that I do not speak very good Spanish or Italian ... I have been wondering and searching historical information of the Salassi name ... All I know of this tribe or culture is that it had its beginings in the indo european stage of evolution of the celts, that the name is one and same as keoltia ..celtic ..were defeated by the Roman in about 25 B.C ....from then on who knows....I think it is odd that I maintain the original surname ...what happened to my people from the time Rome fell till known ancestors whom migrated to Venice and become mariners .... and settled in the America's any information or direction would be appreciated .....plus any support I can offer...I love your website ......thanks for your prayers, i think we all will need them soon .. 09.09.2001 - Hello from Illinois, My grandfather's name was Frank (Franco)(Franch) Bianchetta. He was born June 2, 1877. He came to the U.S. in 1895 and settled in Illinois. He lived in Carbon Hill, Mark, and Highwood, Illinois. His father's name was John and his mother, as it is written in on the marriage certificate, was Francis, Carolina. I don't believe that Francis was her surname, but I suppose it's possible. My grandfather spent several years in France, then his family moved back to Italy. His father, John Bianchetta, went to South America for reasons unknown and died there. Carolina came to the U.S. for a short stay but then returned to Italy. My mother told me that Nono still had family in Italy but they did not stay in touch.Thank you. My grandfather, Frank Bianchetta was
the son of Giovanni Battista Bianchetta (born in Salassa January 29, 1839.
His mother was Carola Franceschino, daughter of Francesco and Margherita
Bianchetta. Besides my grandfather, they had the following children: Marianna,
Maria Marianna, Pietro Francesco and Francesco Maurizio. My great grandfather's
parents were Pietro Bianchetta and Motta Marianna (Valperga). Giovanni's
brothers and sisters were Teresa, Francesco, Pietro, Adrienne Pedrucci Inman IL (USA) and Salassa |

Have recently discovered your website from my brother, Gino Bianchetta,
USA. He has told me much about his visit there and has also showed mE, via
your pictures, the locations of our cousins and grandfathers homes. I would
love to visit there one day and meet all the family. I know very little
Italian (want to learn more) but I understand there is a Piedmonte dialect.
What is spoken in the Salassa region and is it possible to acquire tapes
or CDs of the Piedmonte dialect? Thank you for a very interesting site.

| 18.05.2001 - Dear Friend, I am born and raised in
Belgium, in the region that's called "Flanders". I live now in
Canada. I know that my ancestors come from Italy and more exactly from the
region, called "IL CANAVESE" and from the cities CATELLAMONTE
and CHIERI. It starts with JACOBO PORCHINI, born in Castellamonte in 1470.
He moved to Chieri because of a plague in Castllamonte in 1491.He marries
MARGARITA TAMAN in Chieri - they had a cafe in Chieri, called "Brocca
d'Oro" - they had 4 sons FRANCESCO, MICHELE (died at early age), LUIGI
and BERNARDO. It seems that the family belonged to the nobility, because
the bishop of Saluzzo writes in "Discorso sopra famiglie nobili del
Piemonte" about the family "Porchini di Chieri". The family
had a coat of arms - the head (top) part was in blue and had 3 stars with
6 points - in the center was a black little pig with a horn (porcini in
Italian). The 3 sons, Francesco, Luigi and Bernardo emigrated to Flanders
(there was no Belgium yet in that time) because, it seems, they had a cloth
business or they had something to do with the commerce in cloth, and Flanders,
with the city of BRUGGE (my home-town) Bruges in French, was the capital
of that region and was famous all over the world for the cloth commerce
(Brugge was in that time bigger than London). There is a branch with the
last name PERQUY, now living in Flanders, who thinks that they are descendants
of Francesco Porchini. My family does not belong to that branch. That's
why I think that my family must be descendants from Luigi or Bernardo. It
seems that Luigi was born in Chieri on the 13 of May 1511, was a politician
and writer and lived with his family in Flanders and in Holland. Bernardo
was born in 1505 and lived with his family in Flanders also. The name PORCHINI
has changed over the years to PORQUIN, PORQUI, PERQUIN, PERQUI, PARQUI and
to the present name PERQUY. I would be gratefull if you or somebody else
could give me more information about the PORCHINI family in Italy and about
their business and life in Flanders. porchini@otvcablelan.net

| 17.05.2001 - Thank you for your reply. Last Sunday
I talked to my cousin in Crotte and he told me exactly where Salassa was.
I am quite familiar with the Canavese region and visit my relatives quite
often in Crotte. In fact I am still a land owner there having received the
land on my fathers death. I usually fly into Geneva and then drive into
Italy via Val D'Aosta getting off of the autostrada at Scarmagno from that
exit Crotte is less than 3 kilometers. I have studied the Canavese area
to even before the Romans. In fact that region was controlled by the Celts.
Turin and Milan were Celtic cities and were defeated by Caeser on his movement
to Gaul. This is the reason why many Piemontese have auburn colored hair.
My father having been one with auburn hair. I have also studied the way
that the romans communicated back to Rome from their battle fronts. They
built towers that were inline of sight with each other and used polished
shields to signal from one tower to the next. You can still see the remains
of these towers as you travel the Aosta Valley with the routing going over
the St, Bernard Pass into France. From France (or Gaul as it was called
then) It took less than a day to get the information of the outcome of the
battle back to Rome. There is one legend that was told to me by both my
father and grandmother that I am trying to verify and would kindly ask if
you could find any information about it. The legend starts when the House
of Savoy was in control of Piemonte and one of the Dukes and Duchess were
residing in the Castle in Ivrea. Supposedly there was a Lake on the Dora
Baltea that began at Vische and reached close to Ivrea. The son of the Duke
had been playing along the lake and fell in and drowned. His body did not
surface. So as the legend goes the Duke struck a bargin with the prisnors
of that time to go to Vische and dig out the hill that kept the waters back
forming the lake. The deal was that they would have to start digging from
the down side and when the waters released, any one saving themselves would
be a free man. Now I have a National Geographic map copy of a roman map
made 2000 years ago showing all of Italy. This map does show a lake in that
area. I have also gone to Candia and looked at the tower which is on the
hilside in Candia above Lake Candia, there are tieoffs for boats on that
tower and Lake Candia is well below that tower. I have also gone to Vische
where the Dora Baltea cuts through the mountain (colina as you would call
it) and in my opinion the possibilty exists that there could have been a
lake formed. I would appreciate any information on this subject and thank
you in advance for your help. Ciao cignetti@lily.ezo.net

found it very interesting. I am first generation born in America and still
speak the Piemontese dialect fluently. Both my parents are from the Strambino

| Hello! Your new web site was
forwarded to us by a friend. It is very nice and we appreciate your good
work very much! We have family from the area. My husband's family..Domenico
Papas Giacoletto was born in Sale Castelnuovo Nigre and came to America
in 1906. His mother was Elena Tamietti. His wife and my husband's mother
followed in 1912, Margherita Benone Giacoletto and Elena Giacoletto. They
all came to the beautiful desert area of the Southwest where Dominico worked
in the mines. Others came from Sale to the same area. We are trying to find
any remaining family in the area in Italy. We have been there twice but
could not speak the language well enough to find family. We are related
to Giacoletto, Benone, Bracco, Tamietti. Do you know any of these names?
Again, we love your website..Thank you for sharing it with our Italian families
